Ussangoda
Ussangoda is a well known place in southern Sri Lanka near the port city of Hambantota. This site is a protected area and lies within the Kalamatiya Sanctuary, on one side it is bordering some of the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka. Ussangoda is a mysterious place, color and the landscape of the area is unique to this 20 acre land. Red colored earth in the area is barren – possibly the result of a meteor that struck in 2500 years back.Even though there are many folk stories related to the origination of the land with unusual characters, General belief is that it is a part of a meteor or a proximity to a meteor hit ground zero.
The main rationale for this belief is the soils brick-like hard quality with a reddish color which is unique to this patch of land. Some rocks and soil layers contain what some speculate to be remnants of an extreme heat (caused by an event such as a meteor hit). It is also suspected that the soil has a high concentration of minerals/metals giving its unique color. In several places, especially by the sea facing areas rocks and soil can be observed clearly having multiple layers usually with distinct colorization.
Most of the rocks visible on the surface of this plain which ends in a near sheer drop into the ocean, appears like hardened molten rocks. The soil has the feel and look of burned brick. It is very easy to lean towards thinking that some flash extreme heat had been once directed on the site. The vegetation too is unique here, with cacti and small plants making up most of the plant life.
Other belief is that ussangoda is a legendary landing place of Ravana, the evil king of Hindu mythology who piloted his special peacock chariot across the skies.
